What the CogAT Grade 6 test is
Sixth graders usually sit CogAT Level 12. By this point the test is rarely a first encounter, and it is frequently being used for placement into specific courses rather than into a general gifted programme - which changes what a good score is for. The items get subtler rather than larger: rotations of forty-five degrees rather than ninety, figure rules that change one step rather than two, and verbal items where several answers are defensible until the relationship is pinned down precisely.
How the Level 12 test is structured
Level 12 runs about 176 questions across nine subtests, three per battery, each timed at roughly ten minutes for around ninety minutes total. Sessions are usually spread over more than one day. The nine-subtest structure has not changed since Level 9; what has changed across those four levels is entirely the difficulty of the items.

What the scores mean
A Standard Age Score, an age percentile, a stanine, and an Ability Profile describing the shape across batteries. At grade 6 the profile is often the operative part, since a school deciding on an accelerated maths placement is looking at the quantitative and nonverbal scores rather than the composite. District cutoffs vary and some schools use the CogAT alongside achievement testing rather than on its own.

How to prepare for grade 6
The characteristic grade 6 error is speed, not ability. Items at this level look easier than they are, because the differences that matter are small, and a child who races through the figure sections will lose marks on questions they could have answered comfortably. Practising slowly first and then adding the clock works better than the reverse. Where vocabulary is the limit on the verbal side, accept that it is a months-long fix and plan accordingly.
Common questions about the CogAT in grade 6
Does the CogAT get harder every level, or just longer?
Harder, not longer - the item count and the nine-subtest structure barely move between Level 10 and Level 12. What rises is the subtlety of the items and how closely the wrong answers sit to the right one.
My child scores well but runs out of time. What do we do?
Work on abandoning items rather than on going faster overall. Every question carries the same weight, so thirty extra seconds on a hard one costs a whole easy one - and the single largest gain for an accurate but slow child is learning to move on.
Is the CogAT an IQ test?
It is a cognitive abilities test, closely related in form, but it reports a percentile against other children of the same age rather than an IQ score. Schools use it as one input among several, not as a fixed measure of a child.
