What the CogAT Grade 5 test is
Fifth graders usually sit CogAT Level 11. This is often where the test starts being used for something other than gifted identification - middle school placement, maths tracking, or entry into an accelerated programme that begins in grade 6 - so the score can carry consequences that last several years. The reasoning demand rises noticeably, and in the Nonverbal battery it rises in a specific way: diagonal folds appear in paper folding, and figure items routinely apply two rules at once.
How the Level 11 test is structured
Level 11 has about 176 questions across nine subtests, three in each battery, individually timed at roughly ten minutes each for around ninety minutes of testing. Schools usually split it across sessions. The Verbal battery assumes independent reading throughout, and its vocabulary is now well beyond what a fifth-grade reading list guarantees.

What the scores mean
Scores arrive as a Standard Age Score, an age-based percentile and a stanine, with an Ability Profile describing the relationship between the three batteries. At this age the profile often matters more than the composite, because middle school placement decisions tend to look at whether a child is quantitatively strong rather than at a single overall number. Each district sets its own thresholds.

How to prepare for grade 5
Grade 5 is the level where a method beats intuition for the first time in the nonverbal items, and the highest-return thing you can do is teach one: unfold paper folding in reverse order, and check figure items for a second rule before choosing. On the verbal side, the limiting factor is usually vocabulary, and vocabulary moves through reading over months rather than through lists over weeks - so if the test is more than a term away, wide reading is the better investment.
Common questions about the CogAT in grade 5
Why did my child do worse than in grade 4?
Often it is the format changing rather than the child. Level 11 introduces diagonal folds and makes two-rule figure items standard, and both reliably slow down a child who was comfortable a year earlier. A dip here is common and is not usually a sign of anything.
Is the CogAT used for middle school placement?
In many districts, yes - for maths tracking or for entry into accelerated programmes starting in grade 6. What it is used for varies by district, and it is worth asking directly rather than assuming it is only a gifted screen.
Which battery should we focus on?
Whichever is weakest, unless your district weights one. If a child is strong nonverbally and weak verbally the gap is usually vocabulary, and that responds to reading rather than to practice questions.
