What Paper Folding measures
A square of paper is folded one or more times, a hole is punched through all the layers at once, and the paper is opened flat again. The child chooses the pattern of holes that results. It is a test of spatial visualisation, and it is one of the few things on the CogAT that genuinely improves with practice, because most children have simply never been asked to do it before.
What a grade 7 paper folding question looks like
Three folds plus, in many items, two punches rather than one. The strip is long enough that the early folds have to be held in mind while the later ones are read, so the demand shifts from seeing the transformation to remembering it accurately while doing more of them.
At level 13/14 — grade 7
Level 13/14 combines everything: three folds, mixed directions, diagonals, and often two punches in one item. The reasoning is no deeper than grade 6, but there are more steps to hold at once, so accuracy comes to depend on working memory as much as on visualisation.
Where children go wrong
Losing track across a diagonal fold
A diagonal crease sends a hole to a position that is not simply left, right, up or down from where it started, and mental imagery tends to fail here first. When a diagonal fold appears in an item, it is usually the step where an otherwise capable child goes wrong.
Rushing the final unfolding step
Three-fold items reward slowing down at the point most children speed up. The last fold undone doubles more holes than any earlier one, so a mistake there changes the picture more than the same mistake made at the start.
Trusting the doubling rule too far
Each fold doubles the holes only while every punch sits over folded paper. A punch placed above a region with fewer layers beneath it makes fewer holes, and items at this level use that deliberately. The rule is a check on an answer, not a way of finding one.
How to practise this at home
Real paper still helps, but the goal at this level is a method rather than a feel. Teach your child to work backwards - undo the last fold first, mirroring every hole across that crease, then the fold before it - and to do it without writing anything, since the real test allows no marking. Practise items with diagonal folds specifically; that is where the marks go, and it is what most free practice material leaves out.
Common questions about Paper Folding
Is there a reliable method, or is it just visualisation?
There is a method: unfold in reverse order, mirroring every existing hole across each crease as you undo it. Strong visualisers can skip it on easy items, but on three-fold items with mixed directions the method beats intuition consistently.
How long should one item take?
The real test runs at roughly half a minute per question across the battery. Paper folding items usually deserve a little more than that, funded by moving faster through the classification items, which tend to resolve quickly or not at all.
Does practice actually raise the score?
Familiarity does. A child meeting this format for the first time under time pressure will underperform what they can do, and closing that gap is real. What practice does not do is change underlying spatial ability, and no honest preparation claims otherwise.
