The timer starts as soon as the first question appears. Sit with your child if they are young — reading the instructions aloud is fine and does not change what the report tells you.
Why fifteen minutes
The real CogAT gives about 32 seconds per question. Twenty-seven questions at that pace is a little under fifteen minutes, so this runs at the rhythm of the actual test rather than an arbitrary round number. Working under that pressure is one of the few parts of the CogAT that genuinely can be practised.
What the report will and will not tell you
Three questions cannot measure how good a child is at a subtest — one careless slip moves them a whole band. So the report does not claim that. It shows where your child ran out of time, which formats they had clearly not met before, and every question they missed with a full explanation. That is the part you can actually do something about.
